Discussion
Three Years of Chaos? The British Student Experience in China 1973-1976
This informal discussion aims to examine the ways in which the formation of the contemporary British cadre of China specialists was informed by the experience of study in China pre-1976. It will bring together as many as possible of those who were present as students in China from 1973-1976 and aims to move beyond simple nostalgia, to examine the degree to which 'being there' in the China of the mid-1970s has constructed the authority of the current generation of academics and policy makers, and to what extent this differs from earlier and more recent constructions of academic authority to speak 慳bout China?in Britain.
The discussion will be followed by the Centre for Chinese Studies Annual Reception
