Beginners Mandarin or 60 hours tuition, 3 x 5 -week terms, twice a week, 4 hours tuition per week (Intensive Course)
Who Should Attend This course is designed for absolute beginners. It progressively builds up students' knowledge of vocabulary and grammar for daily usage. Two specific textbooks ‘New Practical Chinese Reader’ textbook and work book and CDs support each class.
Course Description The course is designed to provide an introduction at a reasonable pace over three terms (each term consists of 10 or 5 weeks) in basic Chinese with the emphasis on developing practical listening, speaking and reading skills.
By the end of the course, participants should be able to communicate within a limited range of daily life situations. They will be introduced to 300 commonly used Chinese characters and about 800 words in 30 or 15 weeks. The course also includes instruction on the use of a Chinese dictionary and on basic word processing in Chinese.
Both Chinese and English will be used as the language of instruction in class. The course is still very much practice-based, focusing on listening and speaking, with a balance between communicative activities, structure practice, grammar and reading. Homework is set each week and there will be regular informal assessment and an end-of-term exercise towards the end of each of the three terms.
Course participants are expected to spend at least 2-3 hours each week outside the class on preparation, homework and revision.
Class Size The number of participants is between 6-12 to allow close involvement.
Course Fee
Timetable Classes will be held once a week for 30 weeks, divided into three 10-week terms (Regular Course), or twice a week for 15 weeks, divided into three 5-week terms (Intensive Course). See our timetable page.
